What this experience actually feels like
You leave the Ring Road on Route 26, the tarmac ends, and within twenty minutes Iceland turns into another planet. Black sand desert, sulphur steam from cracks in the rock, the occasional unbridged river you have to wade through to ford. No fuel, no signal, no buildings for hundreds of kilometres. The reward is colour palettes nothing else in the country matches.
The interior is geologically the youngest part of Iceland — most of it formed in the last 10,000 years. Nowhere else combines this scale of active volcanic terrain with this little infrastructure.
F-roads close as soon as the first snowfall arrives — sometimes in late August, more typically mid-September. River crossings render insurance void unless you have specific 'water damage' add-on. Read the policy before signing.

What can go wrong, plainly stated
Unbridged river crossings
Cross only at marked fording points, slowest current first, never alone. Walking it first to gauge depth is mandatory.
Insurance often excludes water damage
A flooded engine in a river crossing is on you, full vehicle replacement cost. Read the policy or take the gravel-only F35 instead.
Weather changes in 20 minutes
Highland temps regularly drop from 14°C to -2°C in afternoon storms. Bring shell + insulating layers regardless of forecast.
Signal disappears completely
Plan check-in times. Tell the 112 Iceland app where you're going. Carry a satellite messenger for multi-day trips.

Common mistakes — read this first
Attempting highlands in a small SUV
Suzuki Jimny and below: insurance voids on most F-roads, river crossings impossible. Step up to a proper 4×4.
Booking June dates and assuming F-roads are open
First F-roads typically open late June; some not until mid-July. Confirm before booking interior huts or tours.
Crossing rivers without scouting
What looks shallow can hide a one-metre drop. Walk it first or wait for a local jeep to lead.
